There is no single magic bullet to prevent cavities, but there are combinations of things that can be extremely effective in the elimination of cavities. Virtually today, everybody can get their mouths much cleaner with the new electronic toothbrush designs. These brushes should be in everyone’s bathroom. Even today, nothing takes the place of dental floss, but electronic toothbrushes in combination with electronic flossers come close.
Along with brushing and flossing, fluoride mouth rinses and gels strengthen your teeth to make them even more resistant to cavities. The new versions of fluorides are particularly effective; more importantly, how and when you apply them can make them even more powerful.
Xylitol is the new kid on the block and has some astounding research behind it. For example, the University of Washington School of Dentistry did one study in Belize where the cavity rate is extraordinarily high due to the children eating so much sugar cane. By having the children chew two pieces of Xylitol gum for five minutes after each meal, they show a 75% reduction in cavities. There are also mints, toothpaste, sprays and gels containing Xylitol. Xylitol is a natural sugar. Our bodies produce trace amounts on a daily basis. Xylitol is found in many fruits and trees. It inhibits the bacteria from growing in your mouth that will cause decay and periodontal disease. We recommend the use of products that contain Xylitol, such as gum and mints, in combination with fluoride gels and toothpaste to improve your oral health. Everyone can use it, but it’s most effective for people with dry mouth, high levels of decay, periodontal disease and extensive dental restorations.
When one starts to combine these technologies, the possibility of eliminating cavities becomes very real. That possibility becomes almost a guarantee when a person also manages his/her diet by reducing sugar intake. Who should use these items? Almost anybody if you have ever had a cavity and anyone who doesn’t want to get one. Children, people in orthodontic treatment, anyone who already has fillings or crowns, if you have a dry mouth, if you have root exposed…anyone who doesn’t want cavities!
